About Presto > Features

The following points cover the main advantages of Presto over many of its competitors.

  • Usability.  The Presto! administration interface is designed to keep the location of options & commands constant and uncluttered as one works on a variety of content.  From left to right, the interface provides:

    • A familiar MS Windows file explorer-like tree for browsing your website & database items, and a search form.
    • A central Page Tools area which indicates a selected item's vital statistics (database id's and linking info), pertinent commands, and status window for viewing results of database actions.
    • A Work Area containing tabs for editing, positioning, securing, publishing and viewing content.

The interface offers simple drag & drop methods for linking, moving or deleting content, and WYSIWYG editing.

  • Flexible, No-compromise Design.  The impressive graphic-laden HTML templates that web designers produce are seamlessly converted into cold fusion templates that draw their content from Presto.  All the javascript, DHTML, and Cold Fusion functions and tools at the disposal of web developers can be applied to these templates.  Presto does not impose constraints on how these pages look; it simply provides convenient data retrieval intelligence for populating them with content.

  • Multilingual Websites.  Presto! makes the job of creating a bilingual website easier by enabling a template's data to be sensitive to the language selection of the viewer.  Web programmers only have to create one form for managing content, and one web page template for displaying it.

  • Multiple Websites.  Able to manage several websites at once.  These website may share content and so draw upon the same database driven content.  They may look entirely different.  The websites may be for an intranet and a public website, or for the public and membership, or a consortium of associations, for example.

  • Form Management.  Some organizations require a number of forms on their website for gathering information or requests.  Presto does well at letting web developers manage these forms - field by field - without having to work at the code level.  This greatly improves quality control.

  • Membership Sections. Presto! enables any page to be marked as "private", requiring that users login to see it.  More than one user level is allowed, so what different kinds of users see can vary.
  • Website Variations.  Different Presto! driven websites can be setup within one installation, effectively delivering users based on their language or login status, to different websites if desired.  Each website gets its own home page and tree of content, but these sites can share pages of content too.

  • Page Caching.  Websites that expect a high volume of users may be wise to take advantage of this feature.  Particular pages can be designated for caching, meaning that an html "snapshot" of a page is taken after it has been dynamically generated, and this picture is returned to website visitors.  This usually involves some custom work to tailor it to a particular client's needs.

  • Scheduled Publishing.  Just about any kind of content can be set up for "content versioning", meaning that any content item has a publish date on which it is made visible on the website, and optionally an archive date when it is removed from the site.  Past, present and future versions of content are all accessable and reschedulable.

  • Reports.   A separate popup report interface can display as many reports as a Presto installation may have.  This prevents a plethora of popups containing different information, and it keeps the main Presto! window simple.

  • Error Reporting.  Any error the Presto server may encounter - whether it be in the cold fusion scripting language, or regarding web server overload, or in a faulty database connection - is optionally emailed to the website owner, web developer or ISP system administrator for investigation.  This greatly improves quality control for both Presto and the web server on which Presto is hosted.

  • Modules.  Presto comes with a few nifty modules! A calendar of events, and a simple discussion board or "blog" can be installed.  A distribution email module is available.
